有关东京艺术大学的木雕教育可追溯到其前身东京美术学校(1889年—1894年),标志着传统美术的创造性复兴。创校的当年(1889年)就有了木雕教育,并有别于西洋画和西洋雕刻。 明治维新后西方文化涌入,政府排佛毁释,传统雕刻家们也陷入困境。于是,创校不久的美术教育受到极大的挑战,传统的雕刻与西洋雕刻产生碰撞,雕塑教育采用了分期教育制。第一、二教室以古代和近代为中心的古雕刻、佛像研究,由竹内久一等主持。第三教室以现代为中心的现代风雕刻研究,由高村光云和石川光明主持。还有稍后成立的第四教室(即西洋雕刻或塑造教室)。最初的教学内容具体如下:
