异常棉(G.anomalum)原产非洲,主要分布在撒哈拉地区,少量在南部非洲.据研究,异常棉的染色体组为B_1,2n=26,具有纤维高品质潜力基因和胞质雄性不孕基因,抗旱性较强.拉马钱特朗(1964)用亚洲棉×异常棉的杂种与亚洲棉回交,杂种的产量超过对照.且结合了异常棉纤维细的特点,没有表现出不利性状,可作为育种材料.纳戈拉金等(1965)在亚洲棉×异常棉再与亚洲棉口交的F_2中,选到2个系,所有经济性状的平均值都超过亲本亚洲棉,其中有8株棉花具有较细的纤维(直径小于22微米).在回交一代中出现超亲分离.
