Objective To investigate the clinical significance of CA125 in serum and ascites of patients with tuberculous peritonitis and ascites. Methods The clinical data of patients with ascites admitted to Zhengzhou People ’s Hospital from September 2007 to December 2009 were analyzed retrospectively, including 39 cases of tuberculous peritonitis and 40 cases of cancerous ascites. The concentration of CA125 in serum and ascites of patients with tuberculous and malignant ascites was determined by enzyme particle method. The level of serum CA125 in patients with tuberculous peritonitis was measured. Results The median values of tuberculous peritonitis, cancerous ascites serum and CA125 were all higher than the normal values (35 kU / L). The serum and ascites CA125 levels were not significantly different between the groups (P> 0.05) After treatment, serum CA125 levels compared with before treatment was significantly different (P <0.05). Conclusion Serum and ascites CA125 levels can not be used as a marker to distinguish tuberculous peritonitis and cancerous ascites, but serum CA125 level can be used as one of the evaluation indicators for the treatment of tuberculous peritonitis.
