廖冰兄的《猫国春秋》带有“改写经典”的性质。这种创作手法在民国时期的文学和绘画中被广泛使用,并经历了由“直陈式”改写向“讽喻式”改写的转变,也就是由带有现代主义色彩的创作手法转变为具有现实针对意义的创作手法。《猫国春秋》中的“讽喻式”改写一方面可以通过张光宇追溯到上海文艺圈中邵洵美、施蛰存等人的现代主义艺术实践,另一方面也受到抗战时期重庆文化氛围的影响。
