Researchers at the Rome Aviation Development Center, Westinghouse and several other airlines are studying the application of optical fibers to phased-array radar antennas. Advanced airborne radar antenna may have 1000 ~ 10000 active array elements, each array element must be connected with microwave components and coaxial cable. However, microwave cables account for a large part of the cost of phased-array radar. In addition coaxial cables are bulky and heavy, which adds to the load on air and land mobile devices. In contrast, the use of fiber optic cables to connect array elements to phased-array radar antennas is not only cheap, lightweight, but also delivers more information. Therefore, it is a very attractive option.
