董仲舒的《春秋繁露》通过发挥《春秋公羊传》的微言大义,在充分消化吸收先秦诸子学说的基础上,构建起了一套以“天”为基础的宇宙本体论作为其理论基础的思想体系。在这套系统而完整的思想体系背后,贯穿其中的正是历史意识与道德意识及其相互渗透、相互强化的互动关系。人们在历史里寻找道德的根据,同时又把历史诠释成道德的历史。无论是道德的历史还是历史的道德,其中都存在一个演进的规律,这个演进的规律就是天命。天命是王道的本体依据,王道是儒家的终极社会理想。
