Clinical studies suggest that mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a manifestation of a particular syndrome in many patients with high, slender body and chest skeletal abnormalities that may be associated with progressive mitral regurgitation, Bacterial endocarditis, cerebral embolism and sudden death. This article reports the echocardiographic study of the prevalence of MVP in the general population of Framingham. METHODS: The population originally surveyed in Framingham, with 4,967 sons, daughters-in-law and woman-in-law, was divided into two groups. 2,036 elderly population 812 were male and 1,224 female (average age 70 ± 7 years, range 61-91 years old). Son, daughter-in-law and 2,931 in-law group
