调谐滤波器一个很大的缺点是工作频率的变化(不同工作频率)要带来体积的变化。如:以调谐滤波器的体积为67.9立方英寸为例,要工作于低频,体积就要增大到200立方英寸,甚至已有达到占据500~1000立方英寸的空间位置,其数倍于这种尺寸的体积是不能容许的。需要一种什么类型的滤波器展现出频带窄、频率可调至一个倍频程或几个倍频程,而且有合理的插损,较小的体积,而又不受工作频率的影响?唯一能满足这种要求的调谐滤波器且具有良好的工作线性的就是YIG滤波器。
