Emotions and Economic War In 1919, Paul Valery wrote in The Spiritual Crisis: For these of us, we now know that our civilization can be dead. ~ We, 21st-century earth inhabitants who failed to escape any world war and make up humankind, have known since then that we can destroy ourselves. And if the possibility of destruction has been regarded only as the punishment of God’s wrath, just as sin, then the religious cause of today’s global tragedy no longer has any religious reference.
