1980-1982年的试验研究初步看出:该病发生与肥水及播种密度有密切关系,凡肥水足、密度大则发病重。秋苗可见病株,春季于4月上旬开始发病,小麦孕穗期最易感病,灌浆期为发病高峰,5月中旬小麦乳熟期病情停止发展。一般千粒重降低8.8-11.6。调查中尚未发现免疫品种,但品种抗病性有差异,以百泉71-41、高38,·大粒白‘烟农16等较抗病。病菌无休眠期,生长10分钟,菌核及病残内菌丝一体为50 C 10分钟。于热下致死温度为75 G 1小时,菌核在80℃下经过3小时尚能萌发。最适酸碱度为pH 6, pH10以上生长受到抑制。在PDA培养基上生长良好,PDA-酵母、PDA-VB1, PDA-尿素等培养基上可产生色素。侵染来源以病生为主,其次是病残体,种子不带菌。该病菌除为害小麦外,尚可侵染高粱、谷子以及狗尾草、蟋蟀草、马唐、稗草、虎尾草等禾本科杂草。
