1999年11月,笔者在北京召开的全国中学地理优秀论文交流研讨会上,得知在韩国汉城举办的第三届国际中学生奥林匹克地理知识竞赛中,我国中学生代表队最大的弱势是地理研究能力明显不足。回校后,笔者在高一地理备课组会议上提出教改设想:取消高一年级上学期地理课程的期终考试,代之以组织学生在寒假进行地理社会调查研究活动,以学生写出相应的地理小论文作为期终考试的答卷。这项设想得到备课组全体教师的赞同和学校领导的支持,也受到学生的普遍欢迎。
