伴随着20世纪50年代经济的高速增长,日本国内开始了大规模公路网的建设。经过长达半个多世纪的不懈努力,截至2005年3月底,全国公路通车里程已达121万公里。其中高等级干线公路达1.2万公里,高速公路达2480公里,一般公路约120万公里(主要包括辅助国道约5.4万公里、都道府县道路约13万公里,市镇村道路约97万公里)。目前已成为世界上公路密度最大,拥有最先进综合交通系统的国家之一。日本国内公路建设与管理实行的是国土交通省、公路局、道路公团三级垂直管理体制。
With the rapid economic growth in the 1950s, Japan started the construction of a large-scale road network.
