Objective To detect the expression of transforming growth factor β1 and P53 in cervical cancer and to explore the role of P53 and TGFβ1 in the development of cervical cancer and the correlation between them. Methods Totally 51 cases of cervical squamous cell carcinoma paraffin-embedded specimens of Tongji Hospital were collected from 1995 to 2000 in Tongji Hospital. Twenty-one cases of chronic cervicitis tissues were collected from paraffin-embedded specimens and normal cervix tissue paraffin Embryonic specimens of 13 cases as a normal control group, immunohistochemical detection of P53 and TGFβ1 protein expression in three groups. Results The expressions of P53 and TGFβ1 in cervical cancer tissues were significantly higher than those in inflammatory and control groups (P <0.01). The expressions of P53 and TGFβ1 in cervical cancer tissues were correlated (r = 0.444, P <0.01). Conclusion P53 and TGFβ1 may participate in a common pathway to regulate the growth and transformation of cervical cancer cells. As an upstream regulatory gene, there is a synergistic relationship between P53 and TGFβ1.
