Adhesion is the most important property that any coating should have. Without adequate adhesion, the superiority of the coating performance can not be guaranteed. With the advent of plasma vacuum coatings, the level of adhesion of the coating has been significantly increased, and many of the test methods used in the past have ceased to be suitable. There is an urgent need for experimental techniques and methods that reliably evaluate advanced coating performance. This method will be of great benefit to both producers and applicators, and may be used by designers to determine the quality standards of the original design specifications, which surface preparation engineers can use to compare and evaluate newly developed coatings. This article discusses the major modern methods of adhesion testing and highlights their strengths and weaknesses. The Scratch test proposed by the author has particular advantages and outlines the successful results of evaluating PVD ceramic coatings by this test method.
