One challenge in detecting the effects of passive inhalation of tobacco smoke on human reproduction is the need to find a sensitive indicator of the level of maternal and fetal exposure. The concentrations of smoke constituents and their metabolites in maternal blood and urine are useful indicators that reflect the level of direct exposure but are not as sensitive as determining passive exposure.
