Cancer cells can degrade sugars and produce metabolic lactate much faster than normal cells. This phenomenon is a warning that there is cancer, but also provides a new way for the treatment of cancer. Wolf Frommer, of the Carnegie Institution of the United States, in collaboration with a group of Chilean scientists, invented a molecular sensor that detects the level of lactate in individual cells in real time. Until then, there was no other way to detect the lactate levels of individual cells in real time and non-invasively. For the past 10 years, Frommer Laboratories pioneered the Frster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), which detects the concentration and flow of sugar in a single cell with a simple change in fluorescence color. This method revolutionized the study of cellular metabolism. Inspired by the sugar sensor, From-
