The Niigata Telegraph and Telephone Company’s Ibaraki Institute first disclosed test results of a subsea transmission system using 1550 nm optical fiber technology. The test was carried out in June last year in the South Pacific near the Annecy Islands. The test uses distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes, two highly integrated repeaters, and dispersion-shifted fiber optic cables. The optical cable and system architecture is different from that used by Corning Glass Works and AT & T in the United States. This structure may represent the future pattern of the undersea lightwave system, not the configuration that AT & T currently uses in TAT-8.
