William Carlos Williams was born in 1883 in a small town in New Jersey. After finishing his medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, he returned to Rutherford, New Jersey, where he spent his entire life practicing medicine, as well as poetry, novels, essays and plays. He is familiar with the neighboring New York literary world, is associated with Ezra Pound and Hilda Durittel and becomes a central figure in American modernist poetry. Williams first dumped Pound’s “image of the” doctrine, but soon became suspicious of its limitations and set itself apart from the rest of the modernist line.
