The literature reports that the blue nail variability in AIDS patients is due to the use of azidothymidine (AZT). The authors saw two patients who were diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and who were untreated, whose nails had mild blue pigmentation. There were no long-term or recent medication history in 2 black male homosexual patients who were tested positive for serum HIV antibody.
