Exhibition Overview of Phoenix Publishing & Media Group at London Book Fair
The 2012 London Book Fair was held at the Earls Court Exhibition Center in London, England from April 16th to 18th, 2012. Phoenix Publishing Media Group (PPMG) sent a delegation of 15 people including President Chen Haiyan as the Head of delegation, Vice-president Wu Xiaoping and AG Deputy General Manager She Jiangtao, as the Deputy Head of the delegation.
For the Book Fair exhibition, PPMG carefully selected over 360 categories of export-oriented books and bilingual translated quality books, showing the content innovation and cultural influence of PPMG. There are brand books that can reflect the traditional Chinese thinking and culture such as Illustrated Chinese Traditional Arts, An Album of Chinese New Year Paintings, Confucian Filial Piety, best-selling books such as One question, one world by Yang Lan, Liu Xinwu’s Continuation of A Dream of the Red Chamber Continued by Liu Xinwu, books produced specifically for foreign markets such as Symbols of China, Symbols of Jiangsu, Peking Opera Codes, Classical Private Gardens of China, Remembrance of the Great Wall, Appreciation of Dunhuang Grottoes, China Dunhuang, etc., themed popular science books such as Exploring the Secret of Karst Fairy, Antarctic Gone with the Time, The Remembrance of Prehistoric Life-Nanjing Homo Erectus, The Pulse of Prehistoric Life - Origin and Evolution of Life (Full Color), The Red-crowned Crane Dancing in the Wind (Full Color), The Loss of the Yangtze Dolphin (Full Color), For the Lovely Creature in Snow Mountains (Full Color), Trailing the Giant Panda (Full Color), etc., Chinese contemporary literature works such as The Flowers of War, The Annals of My Elder Brother Diao Bei, Waiting for Your Love, Lu Xun Literature Prize Series, etc., and also bilingual version of Chinese modern literature works that are committed to overseas promotion such as Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk, A Selection of Essays by Ji Xianlin, A Maze of Stars & Spring Water, The Border Town. These publications are the competitive products by which PPMG expands copyright introduction and promotes copyright export. During the London Book Fair, PPMG has signed 41 export contracts for non-Chinese language copyrights.
In addition to displaying and promotion of the exhibited books, nearly 100 negotiations on copyright and business were conducted, the signing of cooperation agreement on the establishment of PPMG digital printing base in Essex County, England was completed;moreover the opening ceremony of PPMG International (London) Co., Ltd., the world premiere of Symbols of Jiangsu, the book launch of the English version of Encyclopedia of the Peoples of China, the signing ceremony of the English co-operative version of The 20th Century Chinese Literary Anthology, the authorizing and signing ceremony of the English version of Throughout the Great Wall and many other activities were held. President Chen Haiyan was invited to make two keynote speeches on China-EU cooperation publishing and professional publishing cooperation, which were highly praised by Chinese and foreign publishing peers. The Head of Jiangsu Children’s Publishing House Qian Yuanyuan was invited to communicate with Chinese and foreign guests on the publishing of children’s literature at the Copyright Managers Forum. It is worth to note that the Organizing Committee of London Book Fair launched the English-Chinese special issue “China Market Insight” through the BookBrunch magazine. The special issue published two articles of PPMG for free, i.e. one is “Phoenix rises”, and the other is “Stepping into the digital age”, an introduction of PPMG.
The successful signing of project cooperation agreement on the establishment of PPMG digital printing base in Essex County, England has achieved new breakthrough of copyright export. The organization of a number of important cultural exchange activities marks that PPMG has successfully participated in the 2012 London Book Fair and the activities of China as the guest of honor, and the fruitful achievements also mark that PPMG’s international expansion strategy has made the first firm step.
The signing ceremony of cooperation agreement on the establishment of PPMG digital printing base in Essex County, England
On April 17th, the signing ceremony of Sino-British cultural cooperation project was held at the British Foreign Ministry Building, jointly organized by the Organizing Committee of London Book Fair and the General Administration of Press and Publication of China. The member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Li Changchun and the British Foreign Secretary?and?First Secretary of State William Hague jointly attended the signing ceremony. The President of PPMG Chen Haiyan and the Undersheriff Kevin Bentley signed the project cooperation agreement on the establishment of PPMG digital printing base in Essex County, England.
According to the agreement, PPMG will invest to register its first overseas corporate entity- PPMG International (London) Co., Ltd., and build and run the digital printing base based on it. The base will introduce the latest inkjet digital printing equipments and digital solutions of Chinese characters researched and developed independently by Founder Electronics Co., Ltd., as well as other international brands of digital presses, and will provide a wide range of high-end digital printing services for British readers through the advanced digital production management platform that integrate the transmission, printing and management of digital content. In the future, the company will be involved in multiple areas such as copyright trade, culture publishing and creative industries to achieve the three major functions of “global trade, digital printing and comprehensive cultural exchange”. Essex County, England and Jiangsu Province have 20 years of friendly relations, they have mutually established government trade representative’s offices in the Country and Province, and they have a solid foundation of economic and cultural exchanges; the Xinhua Printing Company of PPMG with branch office in London previously, so PPMG is familiar with the printing and publishing market of England, and on this basis PPMG has communicated fully with Essex County on the cooperation intention. The successful signing of the cooperation agreement marked a new level of the PPMG’s internationalization.
The authorizing and signing ceremony of the English version of Throughout the Great Wall
On April 16th, starting from the signing of the licensing agreement of English versions published overseas, PPMG and Jiangsu Phoenix Science and Technology Press Co., Ltd. jointly launched the theme activity “The Great Wall Culture” at London Book Fair.
The “The Great Wall Culture” theme activity includes the authorizing and signing ceremony of the Great Wall photo album Remembrance of the Great Wall (English Version) and the on-line ceremony of the interactive multimedia application “the Great Wall and its Changes in a Century”. Remembrance of the Great Wall collects nearly 600 photographs from various sources, which are divided into 300 categories including old and new photos shot at the same angle but at different times. The interactive multimedia application “the Great Wall and its Changes in a Century” is produced by making album content an electronic application in digital form, which can show the photo content in a more three-dimensional, intuitive and convenient way, and which can tell readers the wonderful stories of the Great Wall behind the photos through the contrast of new and old photos of the Great Wall.
The global premiere of Symbols of Jiangsu
On the morning of April 16th, the British New Classics Press held the global premiere for the book series of Symbols of Jiangsu by Yilin Press. The book series of Symbols of Jiangsu consist of nine books, i.e. Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Suzhou Embroidery, City Walls of Nanking, Yixing Clay Artifact, Huishan Clay Mini-statues, Ancient Chinese Stone Decorations, Cloud Brocade of Nanjing, Suzhou Gardens and Kunqu Opera. The book series select the most typical Jiangsu featured cultural resources with the most symbolic significance, and in the vivid and diverse forms with excellent pictures and texts to show the history and reality connotation of Jiangsu culture and the cultural heritage and cultural influence of Jiangsu, so that the readers at home and abroad can fully appreciate the style and charm of Jiangsu culture and deepen the perception of Chinese cultural essence. On April 17th, Yilin Press of PPMG and Britain Greene Media Publishing jointly held a grand book launch for Encyclopedia of the Peoples of China in the Piccadilly Room at London Book Fair. She Jiangtao, AG Deputy General Manager of PPMG hosted the book launch, and Wu Shulin, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Press and Publication of China attended and delivered a speech. The rich connotation of the digital version sample chapters of the book were uniquely demonstrated on the computer at the book launch. The digital version of the product was more interactive, lively and rich, becoming a major highlight of the launch. Director Wu affirmed the contents of Encyclopedia of the Peoples of China that “it is a good introduction to the characteristics, history and customs of different nationalities of China, and is helpful to understand the profound Chinese culture for the Chinese and foreign readers”. He also appreciated the issuing of Encyclopedia of the Peoples of China in the electronic and paper versions in Chinese and English respectively, and he believed that it better embody the strategy of proceeding with both local and international markets. The Director said that it would be undoubtedly a meaningful event to make the world know the status of all ethnic groups in China well, to make the whole world better know China and to make China better know the world through this book.
Director Wu expressed his appreciation for the new form of digital books, and affirmed that Yilin Press innovatively achieved the co-operative publishing and joint soliciting contributions between China and England. Then the book’s British author, Professor Paul Richardson delivered a speech, introducing the contents and ideas of the co-authored book. In the form of excellent pictures and texts, the book displays the panoramic view of life aspects, customs cultures, traditions characteristics of all the ethnic groups in China, while telling the stories of the convergence and integration of all ethnic groups in China within five thousand years, and the book contents are in a wide range vertically and horizontally covering the past and the present. Mr. Chen Haiyan, the president of PPMG delivered a speech on the global premiere, affirming the attempt of Yilin Press, and jointly “uncovered the hijab” of the English version of Encyclopedia of the Peoples of China with the Director of British Press Greene Media, announcing the official global launch. The book is focusing on the “going global” strategy to build the 12th Five-Year Plan for Publishing Project of China, which was supported by the State Publishing Fund and jointly co-developed and co-published by the British Press and Yilin Press. The signing ceremony of Sino-German co-publishing of The 20th Century Chinese Literary Anthology which is funded by Classic China International Publishing Project and the Key Planning Project of “12th Five-Year Plan”, was held at the exhibition stand of the famous German publisher Springer in the afternoon of April 18th, 2012 .She Jiangtao, AG Deputy General Manager of PPMG and Heinz Weinheimer, Vice President of German Springer delivered a gracious speech at the signing ceremony, respectively. They both agreed that the worldwide publishing and issuing of six volumes of the English version of The 20th Century Chinese Literary Anthology will promote peoples of the world to better know the life and culture of modern and contemporary Chinese people. They also affirmed the importance of the strong cooperation between Yilin Press and Springer Publishing in strengthening the exchanges and cooperation of the publishing industries in China and Germany, which has a demonstrative significance for Sino-foreign co-publishing. Yilin Press is responsible for the publishing and issuing of the anthology in mainland China, and Springer Publishing is responsible for the global publishing and issuing of the anthology other than in mainland China.
