Preface A model used to study the seismic reflection process, consisting of the following basic components: a unit pulse input representing explosives or other sources; a simulation system representing the effects of the Earth, geophones and instruments on the pulse; and the output representing the seismic record (Figure 1) . The entire system is modeled by a transfer function that transforms the input pulse into a reasonable replica of the signal response received by a field instrument. The simulation of this basic process using a digital computer involves the convolution of the transfer function (factor) with the pulse (input signal) to produce the output (unit impulse response). The asterisk is a recognized convolutional mathematical notation.
