20世纪30年代的左翼文艺大众化运动在革命文艺思潮史上具有承上启下的重要作用。从五四新文学到20年代革命文学,然后通过30年代的左翼文艺大众化运动再发展到40年代的新民主主义文艺,这是无产阶级革命文艺的变迁历程。这场运动将大众提升为文艺实践的主体和中心议题,强调文艺“为大众而存在”。在左联领导下,左翼作家们进行了三场思想论争,分别涉及大众化动机问题、现实问题、实践途径以及文字改革等从抽象到具体的议题。这场运动以完成文艺大众化、获得文学的“现代立场”为历史使命,取得了积极的成果。由于远离大众、远离政治现场,这场文艺大众化运动还无法形成联结民众与政治、推动政治革命的文化力量。
The left-wing mass literary movement in the 1930s plays an important role in the history of revolutionary literature and thought. From the May Fourth new literature to the revolutionary literature in the 1920s and then to the new democratic literature and art in the 1940s through the left-wing mass literary movement in the 1930s, this is the vicissitude of the proletarian revolutionary literature and art. This movement promoted the general public as the main subject and central topic of literary and artistic practice, stressing that literature and art “exists for the masses.” Under the leadership of the League, the left-wing writers conducted three ideological debates on topics ranging from abstraction to concrete topics such as popular motivation, practical problems, practical approaches, and text reform. This campaign has made positive achievements in accomplishing the popularization of literature and art and obtaining the “modern stance” of literature as its historical mission. As far away from the general public and away from the political scene, the popularization of art and literature still can not form a cultural force that links people and politics and promotes political revolution.
