虽然休谟对通俗宗教有着广为人知的批评,但是他用似乎称赞的语言谈及“真正宗教”。在《自然宗教对话录》一书中,书中的角色斐罗甚至表达了对“真正宗教”的“敬奉”。这篇论文处理三个问题。第一,休谟自己真正赞成那种他称为“真正宗教”的东西吗?第二,休谟称它为“真正”时究竟意指什么?第三,他将“真正宗教”视为何种东西?依据休谟的一些关于因果和概然性的核心学说,以及《自然宗教对话录》中的角色和内容的一些关键特征,笔者论证休谟的“真正宗教”是由书中人物斐罗所阐释的学说,在认知的意义上休谟视其为“真正”。这个论点与近来伊梅瓦尔(Immerwahr)和法尔肯斯坦因(Falkenstein)所主张的重要解读相反。
Although Hume’s widely-known critique of popular religion, he spoke of “true religion” in apparently praiseworthy language. In The Book of Natural and Religious Dialogues, Philo, the character in the book, even expressed his “respect for” “true religion.” This essay deals with three questions. First, does Hume himself really agree with what he calls “true religion?” Second, what does Hume mean when he calls “real”? Third, he refers to “true religion” According to some of Hume’s core doctrines of causation and probability, and some key features of the role and content in Nature and Religious Dialogue, the author argues Hume’s “true religion” is composed of books According to Philo’s theory, Hume considers it “real” in a cognitive sense. This argument contradicts the recent important readings advocated by Immerwahr and Falkenstein.
