The tenth academician conference of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) closed on June 11. During the conference, Zhou Ji was elected as the new director of the CAE. He was the former Minister of Education and was removed from his post last September.
Zhou Ji was born in Shanghai in August 1946. He graduated from Tsinghua University and once served as the headmaster of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, head of the Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology and mayor of Wuhan.
Zhou became the Minister of Education in March 2003. However, during his tenure, the education quality in China suffered serious recession. The disordered charge was severely blamed and corruption cases happened very frequently. Zhou Ji, who was then leading the National Education Reform Team, was criticized by the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao for several times.
On September 31, 2009, a vote was held in the parliamentary sessions that Zhou Ji was removed from the post of Minister of Education.
Notable is the “National Talented People Working Conference” held in May in which all the present senior government officials were present. During the meeting the top leaders of China required to change the traditional pattern of appointing and promoting people with talents. The top leaders also paid attention to the leaders’ changes of the CAE.
The CAE was established in 1994. It is the highest-level academic institutions in China. However, during these two years, this institution was haunted by academic corruptions and was blamed by the public.
