沈括《梦溪笔谈》载：“古人藏书辟蠹用芸草。芸，香草也。”古人在书中放置香草，不仅可以防蠹虫咬蛀，而且还可以给书留下幽幽清香．“书香”一词便由此而来。后来人们据此加以引申。形容读书人有“书香气”。而读书人家或日“知识分子家庭”。则被称之为“书香门第”。
