I have had thousands of classes since I started school nine years ago. But only one class was the most important.
It happened last term just after I had got a bad result in an exam. I was sad and had lost my confidence(信心). I decided to go to a class which can tell me how to be successful.
The speaker walked into the room. But she did not start talking like a teacher. Instead, she held up a 20 yuan note!
“Who wants this?” she asked. Unsurprisingly, everyone in the class held up their hands.
The teacher smiled. Then she stuck the note on the blackboard and asked the same question. Again, we all put up our hands. The teacher smiled again, but did not say anything. Suddenly, she threw the note onto the floor! Then she asked the question a third time.
I didn’t understand what the speaker was doing. Why was she asking the same question again and again? I didn’t know what to do, but since I wanted the note,1 put my hand up again. Suddenly, the speaker started to laugh. Then she picked up the note. “You have all just told me how to become successful,” she said.
“The note is worth 20 yuan. It is always worth 20 yuan, even if I throw it on the floor. You are like the note. No matter what happens to you, you still have your worth(价值). 1f you realize that, and believe in yourself, you will be successful!”
When I heard those words, I was deeply moved. Suddenly, I realized I was worth a lot. I may have done badly in an exam, but it doesn’t mean I can’t do well in the future.

My name is Betty Sanders. I’m a telephone operator(接线员) , and I work for Universal Telephone Company. My job at UTC is an interesting one. I work five days a week, and my hours are from 9 o’clock to 5 o’clock. I do a lot of things——I place long distance calls for people, I answer questions, and I help people when they are in trouble.
Today, for example, I had an interesting experience. At 11 o’clock this morning, I got a call from some man. I don’t know who he was. He was in trouble and I could tell that he was worried about something. He gave me his address and asked me to send an ambulance(救护车) right away. I asked him if somebody was hurt, but he didn’t answer my question. He told me he needed a doctor at once, so I said I’d call an ambulance for him and I still wanted to know what was wrong. Then he said, “Our keys are gone!” I didn’t understand that! Why would he need an ambulance just because he couldn’t find his keys? Then I found out what the trouble was.
The man and his wife left the car keys on a coffee table, and later they couldn’t find them. Their little boy Johnny was playing in the room, and they thought he swallowed(吞下) them. But before I could help him, he told me he wouldn’t need an ambulance any longer. His wife found the keys in her bag. They were there all the time.

  4. At the very beginning the man and his wife thought their keys would be______by their son.
