Dear Editor,The genus Oryza comprises two species of cultivated rice and more than 20 species of wild rice (Wing et al.,2005).The two cultivated species are Asian cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) and African cultivated rice (Oryza glaberrima).O.sativa was domesticated approximately 10 000 years ago from its wild progenitor Oryza rufipogon. As a high-yield agricultural crop,O.sativa is now very popular across the world, with a broad geographic distribution for planting.O.glaberrima is the African cultivated rice domesticated from its close wild relative Oryza bathii (Wang et al.,2014).O.glaberrima has been cultivated in West Africa since approximately 3000 years ago.O.glaberrima is relatively stress tolerant (e.g.,drought,soil acidity) and adapted to African conditions, but has much less grain yield than O.sativa.
