2005年7月29日,“中法文化交流年”闭幕式上演了由中央歌剧院与法国里昂国家歌剧院联合制作的法国作曲家奥芬巴赫的歌剧《霍夫曼的故事》。这次演出由法国的导演、指挥、音乐艺术指导、舞美及服装设计师与中国的歌剧艺术家在北京保利剧院合作完成,是这部经典歌剧在中国的首次上演,而剧中霍夫曼的演唱者便是陈勇。由于同在一个剧组,从那时起我便开始注意这位温文尔雅,却在演唱中从语言到歌唱再到舞台表演都精准、稳健、热情奔放,由内而外散发着无限魅力的男高音歌唱家。
