Objective To analyze the expression of WWOX and P53 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and to explore the relationship between them and the clinicopathological features of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods The expression of WWOX and P53 protein in 40 cases of normal esophageal mucosa, para-cancerous esophageal mucosa and cancer tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry and analyzed with clinicopathological features. Results The expression of WWOX protein and P53 protein in moderately differentiated and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma tissues were significantly different (P <0.05). The difference of WWOX protein expression between stage II and III ~ IV (P <0.05). The abnormal expression of P53 protein in stage I or II was significantly different from that in III-IV (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the expression of WWOX protein and P53 protein between the two groups The difference of expression rate was statistically significant (P <0.05). In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, the expression of WWOX protein was positively correlated with the expression of P53 protein (R s = 0.514, P <0.001). Conclusions The abnormal expression of WWOX protein and P53 protein is related to the differentiation, clinical stage and metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. WWOX protein is closely related to P53 protein expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Combined detection of WWOX protein and P53 protein can provide meaningful biological indicators for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
