Over the past decade, global consumption of aquatic products has risen significantly as populations and incomes have increased and food habits have changed, along with the rapid rise in trade in aquaculture. Currently, more than half of the aquatic products are transported through international trade and eventually from the developing countries to the developed countries. The EU, the largest importer of aquatic products, accounted for more than 30% of the world’s international trade of marine products in 2008. At present, the contribution of farmed aquatic products to the trade in aquaculture has been increasing year by year. About half of the global aquatic products come from artificial breeding. The vast majority of trade in aquatic products comes from freshwater, seawater and lakes in eastern, southern and south-eastern Asia. There are four important breeding species involved, including tilapia, seawater shrimp, freshwater marsh shrimp and anchovy. These types of farmed conditions have received an unprecedented level of sustained attention.
