In 1964, Aiwa produced Japan’s first cassette tape recorder. However, when it built a videocassette recorder in accordance with Sony’s Betamax format, it fell awry. The format of the video camera has never been popular. The appreciation of the yen in the mid-1980s almost ruined the company. In 1986, Aihua’s sales were US$412 million, a loss of US$58 million: However, in the financial year of 1994, Aihua’s total sales increased by 25% to a record of US$2.9 billion; net profit jumped by 32%. It reached 69 million U.S. dollars. In just a few short years, Aihua was turned into a successful model with an annual revenue of nearly US$3 billion from a company that was on the verge of failing to produce consumer electronics products.
