李约瑟思想最重要也是最基本的支点是强调东西方文化的平等对话。他于东方文明特别是中国文化有精深的研究 ,并给予了高度评价。他认为儒道两家共同构成了中国人精神世界的历史背景 ,并对儒家的道德观、价值观极为尊崇 ;在评价儒家对待科学的态度及贡献方面 ,李约瑟认为从总体方向上儒家对待科学的态度是消极的 ,但是他同时注意到儒家思想对于科学技术实际存有的两种根本自相矛盾的倾向 ,并在具体层面上对一些重要的儒学思想家、儒学重要理念对于科学的影响和贡献给予了充分的肯定。
