Each spring the gardens of Japan’s cities come to life with merry crowds—cherry trees are blossoming. From the southwest to the northeast, blooming gains the attention of all Japan. With maps and images as guides, television keeps the population up to date, day by day, hour by hour with this annual 1)suspense, the progression of the cherry tree front.
Everyone is out: office workers, families, children, grandmothers and students of all ages. 2)Sake and beer are flowing freely. The Japanese people are here under the flower-filled trees together for this vast and 3)eternal celebration. They stroll, laugh, and admire, and open the bento, the meal box.
TV Announcer: Today the cherry trees are blossoming in the Oita, Matsuyama, Kochi and Wakayama regions.
It’s the Japanese weather service that has the responsibility of preparing and keeping this map current. Each local weather service transmits its information. Temperature changes and weather forecasting, along with past data, now makes it possible to calculate the progress of the front.
The Yasukuni Temple in Tokyo is a 4)sanctuary for the souls of soldiers killed during the war. Today, though, the correspondent from the weather service is there to report on one particular tree, where he 5)decrees, hour by hour, the progress of the blossoming process: budding of the flower…blooming…open at 50%...100%. This blossoming, awaited with such impatience, lasts for no longer than three to four days at most. It’s an enormous responsibility for the correspondent because his announcement will soon be the lead story across the media.
Cherry Tree Reporter: Yes? Hello? I’m at the Yasukuni Temple. The flowers are completely open. Yes, good. Could you please declare it officially?

And during this time in the Tokyo television studios, the blossoming of the cherry trees has6)infiltrated game shows, during the airing of the 7)wackiest programs, interrupted with 8)omnipresent9)adverts. For the last 10 years this chart has shown the time of each blossoming of the cherry trees.
An interactive cherry tree front has been put in place on the Internet. From across Japan, site visitors report on the state of blossoming in their own city or village. Modernity in communications oblige[s]. It is television that 10)precipitates the migration of crowds towards the flowers.
Tourist A: I learned of the blossoming yesterday on TV.
Tourist B: I heard yesterday morning on the news at 7:38 am. I thought it was the right time and it’s a beautiful day.
Japan may have entered the 21st century, but each year on April the 10th, there is still a large cherry tree celebration on Mount Yoshino. The degree of blossoming is of no importance. What does count for the residents of the village and the thousands of tourists is celebration of nature.
So beautiful and so 11)fragile, the cherry tree evokes the idea of 12)eternity and 13)impermanence. It is the message of Japan’s cherry trees.
