A new H7N9 virus was first detected in March 2013. Early analysis suggested that this virus, a recombinant form of the H7, N9 and H9N2 avian influenza viruses carrying some of the amino acids associated with mammalian receptor binding, raised concerns about a new pandemic. However, the origin of the H7N9 outbreak and its causes have not yet been known. Studies by Huachen Zhu and colleagues at the Shantou University School of Medicine show that H7 virus has independently occurred at least twice in the H7 virus transfer from domestic duck to chicken in China. Subsequently, the H7 virus was recombined with the endemic H9N2 virus to produce the H7N9 virus and a previously unknown H7N7 virus.
