1978年,印度铁路决定逐步在宽轨铁路上采用21节客车编组的旅客列车。这些列车由两节广泛用于客货运行的内燃、电力机车牵引,并不要求新的大马力机车。虽然在马德拉斯——新德里的线路上采用了第一列双机重联的旅客列车后曾发生过车钩系统损坏的一些情况,但在机车编组上显示了其灵活性。为了查明宽轨和米轨线路上车钩系统损坏的原因,1979~1982年进行了一系列的调查研究。随后对车钩系统和制动系统进行了修改,使牵引力保持在车钩系统的设计限度以内,以防列车脱钩。
In 1978, Indian Railways decided to gradually implement a 21-passenger train on wide-gauge railways. These trains are towed by two internal combustion, electric locomotives that are widely used in passenger and freight operations and do not require new high-powered locomotives. While some instances of damage to the coupler system occurred after the first double passenger reconnection was used on the Madras-New Delhi route, flexibility was demonstrated in locomotive marshalling. In order to find out the reasons for the damage of the coupler system on the wide-gauge and the meter-gauge lines, a series of investigations were conducted from 1979 to 1982. The coupler system and brake system were subsequently modified to keep the traction within the design limits of the coupler system to prevent the train from being uncoupled.
