中国人何时知道马克思,建国后经过一些人努力,已将时间推到1899年李提摩太和蔡尔康合作意译颉德《社会进化》一书,以《大同学》名,刊于《万国公报》第121—124册。1987年9月16日陈铨亚在《光明日报·史学》发表《马克思主义何时传入中国》一文,否定1899年说,说首功应归于胡贻谷翻译《泰西民法志》(说是1898年夏出版)。虽然从陈的文章看,其论据是极软弱无力,但周尚文主编的《中国共产党创建史》(上海人民,1991年)已将之变为肯定的叙述。《中国出版》创刊时开始连载的中国近现代出版大事记,在1991年第6期上说;1898年,“广学会出版英人克卡朴《泰西民法志》,原书名即《社会主义史》。这是在近代中国最早介绍社会主义思想的一本书。”依该大事记体例,也是根据这篇文章。三人成虎、曾参杀人,所以值得将其指出。陈的文章说:
