About 15 years ago, I wrote a long essay about the differences in Taiwanese opera on both sides of the Taiwan Strait from ten aspects. The articles were published in Taiwan’s “Performing Arts” and the mainland’s “Chinese Drama.” In recent years, the author and PhD students discuss the same topic again, with some new feelings. There are three main points. First, differences in theater system. There are two types of opera troupes on the mainland. One is public service. Although many of them have changed their signboards, they are called “transfer centers” or “certain companies.” However, the government is paying monthly wages. Actors rely on the country to keep, do not have to worry about whether the rice pot.
