薳子受编钟和编镈出土以后,其铭文释读以及年代一直存有争议。铭文中“叁月=唯戊申,亡作昧爽”一句是争论的焦点。“亡作”从语意上看应是记录时间的词语,应当读为“荒落”即《尔雅·释天》“太岁在巳曰大荒落”中“大荒落”的简称,表示的是太岁纪年。根据太岁运行周期的规律以及铭文中其他有关作器时间的信息,可以准确推断出薳子受铜器的制作年代是公元前546年,从而能够进一步证明楚国当时使用的历法是建丑。薳子受铜器铭文的释读以及年代的确定,对春秋铜器断代以及历法研究有重要价值。
