Some earthquakes with focal depths of over 70 km are accompanied by aftershocks that can be clearly recorded by more than one teleseismic station. Accurate determination of the relative vectors distinguishing between aftershocks and about 60 initial events found that the vector directions were uniformly distributed for the nodal planes of the focal mechanism solution of the main shock. When both initial events and aftershock mechanisms are available, there are sometimes significant differences in the mechanism solutions between the two. These results show that the deep earthquake rupture does not slip along a simple plane. Our results are inconsistent with previous aftershock analyzes because other researchers did not realize that the focal hemisphere was within 16 ° of one of the two nodal planes.
