在现代语言习惯的用法中,固定旋律(Cantus firmus缩写为C·f·)通常是标志一个从世俗或教会音乐中借来的曲调,并且在新的音乐构思、创作中以它作为装饰变化的依据。固定旋律作为一个新构思的基础或核心,并不一定要与其曲调来源的作品协调一致,可以有自己独特的装饰改变。作为一个新构思基础的固定旋律,也不总是来源于以前已产生的作品,人们有时也运用象简洁的动机。上行或下行的音阶片断、六音音列(一种古希腊或中世纪的音阶形式),甚至布谷鸟叫等作为固定旋律。
