中国书画艺术自秦晋以来,自成体系。近代以降,受传统艺术发展的限制,更有国势衰弱受尽列强欺凌,遇到了难以逾越的瓶颈。西风东渐下,年轻人出国留学,寻找先进的东西,试图改造陈旧因袭的传统艺术。以徐悲鸿为首追求写实画风,而林风眠更多的受到了现代主义的浸染。在欧洲本是有两个有先后顺序的画风,留学圈里却是针锋相对的绘画形式。蔡元培创办国立艺术院,请林风眠执教,与他观点相近的画家追随而至,在杭州形成了一个有现代主义倾向的艺术家群落,一大批两岸艺术圈的中坚艺术家以及教育家,都是在这里起步。
