Director’s Passion for Wu Opera
By Pan Guojun, our staff reporter
In early December 2006, Wu Opera, a 400-year-old theatrical tradition in central Zhejiang Province, displayed its magnificent charms in Hangzhou. Involved in this grand one-week performance were five Wu Opera troupes from Jinhua and neighboring cities and counties, which exhibited five classic plays at the downtown Victory Theater. The gala event not only gave enthusiastic fans an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy, but also exposed the first-timers to the splendors of Wu Opera.
The triumphant gala was made possible by a large group of enthusiasts from all walks of life across the province. After the weekly event, the Zhejiang Council for the Promotion of Wu Opera was founded. The organization consists of celebrities, scholars, and experts within and without the province. Director of the Grain Administration of Zhejiang Province, Li Linfang is the director of the ZCPWO and is probably the most fanatic fan of Wu Opera in the country.
So how come he has such an ardor for the traditional opera? And how fanatic he really is?
The full exposure to the charm of Wu Opera in his early childhood years in the southern Zhejiang province made him infatuated with it. In high school and college years, he learned to play several musical instruments used in the Wu Opera. In the 1980s, he worked in the southern part of the province as a government official, which brought him back to the region where Wu Opera is a popular entertainment. In 1998 he was transferred to Hangzhou and assumed the directorship of the provincial grain authorities.
His work and life in Hangzhou enable him to find more fans of Wu Opera and a more amenable cultural environment. In his spare time, Li Linfang took musical lessons from professionals to play musical instruments used in the Wu Opera. Now he is a good player. He has organized a band that consists of Wu Opera enthusiasts. The band meets regularly to play Wu Opera pieces. Li has collaborated with professional musicians in recording thirteen Wu Opera musical pieces, which will be released soon.
In addition to the aforesaid Wu Opera gala in Hangzhou, Lin has been a motive force behind other Wu Opera activities in Hangzhou. For example, he organized a Wu Opera performance to entertain his 200 colleagues who came from all over the country for a conference in Hangzhou in November 2006. It was a huge success. In 2000, he was instrumental in an event in celebration of the 45-year career of Zheng Lanxiang, a Wu Opera master.
Li Linfang looks forward to more promotional activities to be conducted by the Council. One big plan is to sponsor a province-wide Wu Opera competition on television so as to give opportunities to promising Wu Opera artists. Another big plan is to see to the possible to have a symphony composed on the basis of Wu Opera musical elements.
Now, a national Wu Opera website is established in conjunction with the Xinhua website. The Wu Opera website has become the primary source for some Chinese restaurant proprietors in Europe to download Wu Opera performances and play them to their customers. The European feedback is highly positive.
