佛教是公元前6世纪后半期由印度的释迦牟尼创始的,汉代传到中国,后传到朝鲜半岛的高句丽、百济,接着又传到日本。莲花纹瓦当在东亚是佛教传来和普及的标志之一。
Buddhism was initiated by Sakyamuni of India during the second half of the 6th century BC. It spread to China in the Han Dynasty and reached Koguryo and Baekje in the Korean Peninsula and then to Japan. One of the hallmarks of the spread and popularity of Buddhism in East Asia is the lotus pattern.
