《小学钩沉》辑录小学佚书44种,佚文2530余条,是研究中国传统语言文字学的重要资料。《小学钩沉》引用典籍49种,主要是古注、类书、小学类古籍。《小学钩沉》开清代大规模辑佚小学佚书之先声,刻本较多,流传较广,学术价值较高。《小学钩沉》也存在着一些错误和不足,主要体现在引书卷数误、书名误、漏辑、编排不当等方面。
