杰克·伦敦是美国19与20世纪之交著名的作家兼思想家,他的笔下曾触及一定数量的日本书写。《酒井绪、和乃爱子与孝武》(1895),《夜游东京湾》(1895),《阿春》(1897)和《在东京湾》(1903)是伦敦早期四部被研究者忽略的日本题材文学创作。这四部短篇,虽不乏伦敦对日本底层或弱势群体的同情,但其中或多或少留下了伦敦“白人至上”种族主义思想的烙印,有的作品还十分明显。中后期的创作,伦敦以新闻报道、书信及政论文的形式延续了有关日本话题的思考,冷静、理性的分析多于种族情绪的渲泄。应该说,伦敦的日本书写存在一定的种族主义意识,但其种族意识总体呈现由强及弱、不断弱化的渐变态势。
Jack London was the famous writer and thinker at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States. His works touched a certain amount of Japanese writing. “Sakai Yasuhisa, Aiko and Takahiro” (1895), “Night Tokyo Bay” (1895), “Achim” (1897) and “Tokyo Bay” (1903) were ignored by early London researchers Japanese theme literature creation. These four short stories, though lacking of London’s sympathy for the bottom or disadvantaged groups in Japan, have more or less left a mark on the “White supremacy” in London. Some of the works are still very clear. In the later period of creation, London continued the thinking on Japanese topics in the form of news reports, correspondences and political essays. The analysis of calm and rationality was more than that of racial sentiment. It should be said that there is a certain sense of racism in the Japanese writing in London, but its ethnical awareness generally shows a gradual trend of becoming stronger and weaker and weaker and weaker.
