Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1989 comprising three core members: Billie Joe Ar-
mstrong (guitar, lead vocals), Mike Dirnt (bass) and Tré Cool (drums). Green Day is one of the important bands in the time of American Punk music Revival, their members were deeply affected by the classic bands in the Punk music period of 1970s,and concise and fluent melody made their music much easier to be pop. After Nirvana Dynasty collapsed in 1994 and when Punk music Revival and Alternative Pop/Rock music were in power, Green Day also jumped to become the mainstay of this agitation, one of the most popular rock bands after the 1990s, also one of the most influential bands in the time of American pop music Punk Revival.
In 1988, Billie Joe Armstrong, only a 14-year-old guitar and sin-
ger, together with his child companion bass Mike Dirnt, who was as old as he,formed their first band—Sweet Children in Northwest,California,US. Soon the band got its first drummer Al Sobrante who considerably helped the ba- nd's development by booking a lot of shows. In 1989 they released their first EP 1,000 Hours, which brought the band more fans, more gigs and eventually a record deal. They got signed to an independent label Lookout Records, which released their first two albums.
Right before the release of 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, their first album,Sweet Children changed their name to Green Day. Soon after the release another change came—Al Sobrante quit the band and was replaced by Tré Cool who became Green Day's permanent drummer. Green Day was becoming more and more popular and soon after the release of their second album Kerplunk in 1992, they were impressed by the major records and eventually signed a contract with Reprise Records.
In the spring of 1994 Green Day released their major label debut Dookie, which was a huge success. It eventually sold over 8 million in the US only and over 12 million internationally, which also brought them the 37th Grammy Awards—the best alternative music performance in 1994.The 1994 gig in Woodstock showed that Green Day were undoubtedly the most successful and loved band of the year.
Insomniac came out in 1995 and sold over 2 million copies by spring of the next year. However, none of its singles were as successful as the ones from Dookie and the album itself wasn't as big as its predecessor. Besides, the band cancelled the European tour claiming exhaustion.
But they lost no time and immediately started working on the new album. Nimrod came out in 1997 and was well received by both fans and critics. It sold 80,000 copies in the first week after the release, and is still considered one of the best albums ever released by the band. Nimrod wasn't a huge success in sales, but it gained a lot more respect towards the band than any of their previous albums. After the promotion of Nimrod was over, Green Day took a pause that lasted almost 2 years.
In 2004 Green Day released their major label 5th album American Idiot and in 2005 won seven out of eight nominations in that Grammy Awards, including "Best Video of the Year" Award, and none of punk bands once won this special honor before.

  ■Interview:
Q:Do you think about releasing a new album recently?
Billie:Yes, now everyday we discuss of new ideas together, and every day we record some audition tape. Although the overall concept of the new album has not been determined, presently we put down every possibility at first. Then we will carefully consider every idea, and develop the direction we most wanted into the content of the new album.
Q:Would you please talk about the expectation to your new future album?
Billie:We hope every work done for the new album is our painstaking effort crystal which we devoted ourselves into wholeheartedly and absolutely. We do not want to record casually 12 songs then hastily issue, this is too bored. What we want to do is not just an album, but ought to be a creative result with complete concept.
Q:It is said that you are ready to adapt American idiot into a movie, isn't it?
Billie:Yes,We have more ideas of this film per week, I am sure that this film version of American idiot must be filmed successfully.
