Three calcium channel blockers, nifedipine, verapamil and iltiazem, have been widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. These drugs have different effects, but all inhibit calcium ions into the cells and act on the smooth muscles of many organs in the body. Esophageal smooth muscle contraction requires calcium. Human infusion of calcium can increase the rate of esophageal contraction. Weiser et al.
