Jack Welch became the chief executive officer of General Electric of the United States (GE) for more than 20 years. He insisted on innovation and management and achieved world-renowned performance. GE’s market share increased by US$500 billion, its staff decreased from 425,000 to 300,000, and its assets increased from US$25 billion to US$135 billion. GE, which was originally on the verge of a crisis, became one of the most dynamic ultra-large-scale companies in the world. Many of the corporate management talents he brought out are now on the Fortune 500 list. He was honored by the media and his peers as “Century Manager” and “the toughest boss in the United States.” Some of his practices, such as “turning, selling, and shutting down,” “4E principles,” and drawing “employee vitality curves,” are becoming a model for many modern enterprises to follow. In September 2001, 65-year-old Jack retired from office. On the fourth day after retirement, he completed the manuscript “Jack: Everything Comes from Courage” that reviewed and summarized his half-life management experience.
