Commonly used methods for cutting gray cast iron parts are oxygen flux gas cutting, metal arc cutting and plasma arc cutting, but both have drawbacks. The new method of cutting cast iron is arc-gas cutting using flux cored wire. The composition of the flux cored wire allows for stable combustion of the arc and formation of a thin molten layer in the cast iron. Sprayed from the nozzle, supersonic airflow flows around the wire to quickly remove the molten metal from the cutting area to form a cut.
