As the flight system becomes increasingly complex, new demands are placed on the display of information. Some information that was previously unobtainable must now be displayed; some too stupid, overweight, expensive, or poorly developed displays should also change appearance. This article considers possible mechanisms for future cockpit displays and their performance under high ambient light conditions; discusses ways to improve the readability of commodity displays with techniques that enhance contrast; and introduces and discusses “Observer Tests” of light-emitting diodes Some of the results.
